Dear Hokie Nation,
I'm writing to share some thoughts and reflections on my time as the President of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, a role that has been immensely fulfilling and impactful.
A Transformative Journey
Over the past dozen years, Virginia Tech has undergone a remarkable transformation. We've witnessed a 30% growth in undergraduate enrollment, a 70% increase in extramural research expenditures, and a 185% boost in our endowment. Our U.S. News & World Report ranking has improved by 20 spots, and the number of undergraduate applications has skyrocketed by 200%.
What makes these achievements even more remarkable is the underlying ethos of service and engagement that defines Virginia Tech. Our commitment to Ut Prosim, or "That I May Serve," has guided us in becoming a university that is not only academically excellent but also deeply rooted in every community across the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond.
Leading with Aspirations
As I reflect on my time as president, I am most proud of the over 100,000 Hokies who have earned their degrees since I began in 2014. These graduates are a testament to the power of education and the impact it can have on individuals and communities. Our university's ambition to go further is evident in our current priorities, which include Virginia Tech Advantage, Virginia Tech Global Distinction, and Invest to Win.
The late Nikki Giovanni, Hokie Nation's renowned poet, beautifully captured the spirit of Virginia Tech when she said, "We are better than we think and not quite what we want to be." This sentiment resonates deeply with me and serves as a guiding principle for the future of our university.
A New Chapter
While Virginia Tech is thriving on many fronts, I believe it is time for a smooth transition to a new president who can take the university to even greater heights. I have shared my commitment to serve until my successor is in place, ensuring a seamless handover.
Laura and I will always consider ourselves Hokies, and Blacksburg will remain our home. We are grateful for the opportunity to have served this incredible community and are excited to see what the future holds for Virginia Tech.
Go Hokies!
Tim Sands
